Mercy Medicine Clinic has opened a new office in Lake City! The new clinic is servicing the uninsured of Lake City and the surrounding areas. The director of Mercy Medicine, Kaye Allen, along with the dedicated staff and volunteers, has laboriously concentrated on meeting the needs of these individuals in our community. In celebration, the new clinic hosted a Grand Opening on Monday, January 7, 2008 at 12:30pm. At the event, United Way of Florence County presented a $10,000 check to Kaye Allen to assist in launching the new clinic. United Way of Florence County hosted a Leadership Appreciation event at Carolinas Hospital System’s Floyd Conference Center on April 29th.  Leadership donors contribute $500 or more annually to the United Way Campaign.

At the event special recognition was given to Ms. Ruth Lide and Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Brand, II for their generous contributions to United Way.  These donors became members of Florence County’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society.

Membership in the Society is granted to individuals who contribute at least $10,000 annually to the United Way Campaign. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Aycock are also members of the Society, but were unable to attend the event. Florence County’s Tocqueville Society is chaired by Mr. Frank J. Brand, II.

United Way of Florence County would like to thank all of our leadership donors. Without individuals such as these it would not have been possible for us to reach our fundraising goal this year of $1,550,000!

We would also like to thank the sponsors of the Leadership Event. United Way of Florence County does not spend contributed dollars on appreciation events; everything for our event came from generous sponsors! We would like to thank Jim O’Loughlin and Carolinas Hospital System for donating the Floyd Conference Center. We would also like to thank Roche Carolina, AG Edwards, BB&T, Progress Energy and Blue Cross Blue Shield for their contributions towards the event.

United Way of Florence Awards $10,000 for ScienceSouth Summer Camp

Florence, SC, June 9, 2008-On Monday, June 9 the United Way of Florence awarded funding to ScienceSouth that will make summer science fun possible for some area children. At its Florence office, the United Way presented ScienceSouth Project Director Colleen Zilio a $10,000 check that will sponsor 40 Florence students to attend ScienceSouth’s summer kids’ camp.

“This grant will assist ScienceSouth in the provision of career awareness and focus during the summer months for area youth who would not otherwise have the opportunity to do so. The program has clearly stated anticipated outcomes and is designed to plant the seeds of technological inquiry that will, hopefully, manifest itself in future technicians and scientists from this target group” stated David Barr, President of United Way of Florence County.

“ScienceSouth is focused on the development of the next generation of engineers, scientists, and technicians,” Zilio said. “We are thrilled that the United Way will provide the opportunity for 40 students to participate in summer camps that will give them a deeper understanding of critical science concepts. We aim for students to leave with alternative ways of thinking about careers in science and technology.”

Through the summer camps, students will discover the excitement of learning through hands-on activities enabling them to experience real world of science. “The 40 sponsored children come from low-families that financially may not have able to send their child to camp,” Zilio said. “Economics should not deter academic enhancement and we’re so happy that the United Way stepped in to provide these children with the chance to take their first steps to a new career path and a successful future.”

ScienceSouth launched its first camp on June 9 and will offer various camps through mid-July. The camps range from Animals in Our Backyard and Crime Science Investigators to Engineering Marvels and Fantastic Flying. Visit www.sciencesouth.org for information on other kids and family workshops available at ScienceSouth on Jeffries Creek.
